And while your at it, get some free email storage.

Why use a third party email server?

Persons who have a sitebuilder package or web hosting plan may find their email storage might take up a lot of space. That is because free cPanel/domain emails use the same storage as the website builder and hosting plans. This can slow down your website if you use up a large chunk of storage for sending and receiving large files. It could even limit your emails. This is where Gmail comes in.

You can use Gmail as your email platform and connect your custom domain email to it. This way you can benefit from having a branded email and also the storage Gmail is known for.

Additionally, you get to save your website hosting/sitebuilder plan storage. Gmail will give you more than adequate amount of storage for your Gmail enabled devices.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let us find out how to connect your cPanel email to Gmail. To do this you will first need the right Gmail SMTP settings.

Gmail SMPT Settings

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, (SMPT) is a consistent method used for the process of sending emails everywhere. While a number of email clients will allow you to add SMTP automatically as soon as you enter your login credentials, others do not. You may have to enter the info manually. Here’s the Gmail SMTP settings.

Whenever you add your account to a chosen email client, you will, usually off the bat have to enter your email address and password. Here is Gmail SMT setup setting.

Gmail SMTP setup settings:

  • The SMTP username: This is your Gmail address
  • Your SMTP password: Refers to you Gmail password
  • The SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
  • Gmail SMTP port (TLS): 587
  • SMTP port (SSL): 465
  • SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

How to connect your cPanel Email Account to Gmail

 Step 1: Create a free cPanel email

Set up an email account using cPanel. If you already have an email there, you are ready to connect to Gmail. Log in to your cPanel account. Under the Email heading scroll to the Email Accounts icon. Click on it.

Your goal on this page is to create a new email account. So go ahead and click on the Add Email Account tab. Fill out the form with your desired email address, a password and mailbox quota (i.e. storage space). When you are done filling out the form, click Create Account.

Step 2: Enter cPanel and access Webmail

Go to Email Accounts tab. This is where you’ll find the email account you’ve just set up.

Click on Access Webmail to view your email account. On the following page, you will find the webmail applications that come with cPanel. If you click on one of these options, you will be taken to your inbox.

Step 3: Get your email settings

To find your email configuration details head back to the Email Account tab and click on Connect Devices then click Set Up Mail Client.

On this new page scroll down until you find a section called Mail Client Manual Settings.

Step 4:

At this stage, you can connect your cPanel email account to a Gmail account you own or set up a new Gmail account especially for this email account. Click here to set up a Gmail account.

As soon as you sign in to Gmail or create a new account, select the cog button and click Settings.

On the Settings page, go to Accounts and Import tab, then look for the Check mail from other accounts option. Click on Add a mail account link.

In the small yellow pop up window that appears, enter the email address associated with the account that you want to add to your Gmail account. Click on Next.

Here you choose whether you want to link accounts using Gmailify, or import your emails from another account.

If Gmailify isn’t available with your provider use option 2, which is import emails from other account (POP3). Then click Next.

On this new page, enter your username, which is your email address, and your password. The incoming server is the POP Server and the Port is the POP3 Port.

Ensure you always use a secure connection (SSL) whenever you are retrieving mail.

When you finish entering your details, click Add Account. On the next page, choose if you want to be able to send and receive mail using your cPanel email address from your Gmail account. If so, select Yes and then click Next.

On this new page, enter your name. The name you choose will be associated with the emails you send via Gmail using this address. When you are done, go to Next Step.

On this page, you will need to enter the outgoing Server details. Your SMTP server is generally your website URL, while your port is the SMTP Port. You can find this on your mail client settings. Also, you will need to enter your email address and your password. That the one you created when you were setting up your email account.[/p]

Once again be sure to choose Secured connection using SSL. After doing that click Add Account.

Step 5: Sync your contacts

At this point, you will receive a confirmation code in your email account that you are adding to your Gmail account. Once you get it, click verify.

Once you this connection is complete, go to settings and click on the Accounts and Import tab. At this point, you can now send mail and check mail from your cPanel email account.

Step 6: Confirm your email address

This final step to authenticate your email address is optional but recommended. You can authenticate your email address in two ways. You can use either DKIM or SPF. Gmail recommends that you use DKIM. So under the DKIM title, click Enable.

You may see a few warnings saying that your domain could not be authenticated. That is normal and usually disappear after a couple of hours once you authenticate your email. But, if these warning are still there for a prolonged period get in touch with your hosting provider.

You can also assign a profile photo to your email address.

Conclusion

There are several reasons Gmail is awesome for its free storage with their basic plan. Several email providers started long before Gmail. But, in true Google character, it came and shook up the market by offering lots of storage. Giving users 15 gigabytes of storage for their messages with the free basic service.
